Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about osteopathic treatment in Calgary NW.

Osteopathy is a whole-body, manual therapy approach to treatment that looks at how the body’s structures, including bones, muscles, joints, fascia, and circulation, work together. Using gentle and precise hands-on treatment and clinical reasoning, the goal is to identify and address areas of restriction, imbalance, or discomfort to return health to your body.

Osteopathy takes a whole-body approach to healthcare. Rather than focusing only on where symptoms are felt, treatment aims to understand how different areas of the body may be influencing one another.

By restoring healthy movement and reducing restrictions throughout the body, osteopathic treatment supports your body’s natural ability to function, adapt, and heal.

Osteopathy is suitable for people of all ages and stages of life.

Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing chronic discomfort, looking to improve mobility, or simply wanting to support your overall health, osteopathic treatment may be beneficial.

Some common reasons people seek osteopathic care include:

The goal of treatment is to support the body by focusing on restoring healthy motion and function throughout the body to support your overall health.

No, a referral is not required for osteopathic manual therapy. You are welcome to book directly. In some cases, I may request medical clearance from your physician before proceeding with treatment.

Classical osteopathy is not time-based, but guided by what each patient needs in the session. Most appointments typically last 20 to 30 minutes.

Please wear comfortable, full-coverage clothing to allow for ease of movement and assessment. Bring a pair of socks for your appointment. If you have long hair, please bring an elastic to keep it tied back during your session.

Arriving well hydrated helps support your body’s natural tissues and can make treatment more comfortable.

We recommend drinking plenty of water before and after your appointment. Following treatment, many patients also benefit from light movement, such as an easy walk, while allowing their body time to adjust over the next day or two.

Treatment is typically gentle and non-invasive, working with the body rather than against it. Some holds and positions may be noticeable, but should not be painful. In some cases, you may feel mild soreness after treatment, similar to post-exercise soreness. This is a normal response as the body adapts and integrates changes following care.

This depends on your individual presentation and goals. Some people notice changes quickly, while others benefit from a series of treatments over time. Your first session will always begin with a detailed intake to review your goals and assess what your body needs, followed by an initial general treatment to see how your body responds to osteopathic care.

Osteopathic treatment is a gentle, hands-on approach to care.

Your appointment will begin with a discussion about your health history, concerns, and goals. During treatment, we will use gentle manual techniques to assess and improve movement throughout your body. You may be asked to take a deep breath, gently move a limb, contract a muscle or change positions, but most of the treatment is passive, meaning you can simply relax while we guide your body through treatment.

Treatment should never be painful, and many patients find it to be a calming and relaxing experience. However, in some areas it can feel like a deep intentional stretch.

Osteopathic treatment is not covered by Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP), but it is covered by many extended health benefit plans.

Because every insurance policy is different, we recommend contacting your insurance provider before your appointment to confirm your individual coverage.

While we do not offer direct billing, you’ll receive a detailed receipt following your appointment that can be submitted to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
